BRABU UG Admission 2026-30 – UMIS Portal Opens from 4 May, Apply Online for BA, BSc, BCom at umis.brabu.ac.in

BRABU UG Admission 2026-30 is set to begin from 4 May 2026 after the Vice Chancellor of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University (BRABU), Muzaffarpur, issued a formal order to open the UMIS (University Management Information System) Portal for undergraduate admissions. The application process for the 4-Year UG Programme (BA, BSc, BCom — Semester 1) for the academic session 2026 to 2030 under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) will be conducted entirely online at umis.brabu.ac.in.

This year, a major policy change has been implemented — no spot admissions will be allowed. All admissions will happen strictly through the merit list published on the official portal. With approximately 1.5 lakh seats across 144 colleges (constituent and affiliated) under BRABU, and the first merit list expected in the first week of June 2026, students who appeared in the Bihar Board Intermediate (Class 12) examination in 2026 should begin preparing their documents and registering on the UMIS portal immediately after it opens.

This is the only complete English-language guide covering everything — from the UMIS vs Samarth portal confusion, to the 10-college choice strategy, NAD ID registration, merit list calculation, and what to do after the merit list is published.

BRABU Admission 2026-30. What’s New This Year?

Before we start, lets look at the changes for 2026.

Here are the key updates:

  • No more spot admissions: In the past students who didn’t make it to the merit list could still get in through spot admissions at the college level.. For 2026-30 that’s not an option. You must apply online. Be on the official merit list to get admission. If you don’t make it to any of the three merit lists you’ll have to wait for special spot rounds. If they happen. Or try again year.

The UG programme is now 4 years under CBCS. This is a change from the 3-year TDC structure. You can now exit after 1 year with a Certificate, 2 years with a Diploma, 3 years with a Degree or 4 years for an Honours or Research degree. The BRABU UG programme is now aligned with the National Education Policy 2020.

  • 144 Colleges in First Phase: The Vice Chancellor has said that 144 colleges will be covered in the phase. These include both colleges that’re part of BRABU and those that are affiliated with it. More colleges might be added later.

When you apply you can choose up to 10 colleges in order of preference. This system helps because if your top choice is full your application will automatically move to the college.

The BRABU Admission process has these changes for 2026-30. Every student must apply online. The merit list is important, for admission. BRABUs UG programme is now a 4-year programme. Students can exit at levels. A maximum of 10 college choices are allowed.

UMIS Portal versus Samarth Portal. Which One Should You Use?

This is something that really confuses students at BRABU and nobody else explains it in a way:

UMIS Portal is found at umis.brabu.ac.in. UMIS means University Management Information System. This is the portal that BRABU uses for admissions to undergraduate programs. You do everything on this portal for BA, BSc and BCom admissions. This includes filling out the admission form, registering, selecting a college paying fees and seeing the merit list. You need to use this portal if you want to get into BRABU for the 2026-30 session.

The Samarth Portal is a platform that the Government of India made for managing education. Many universities in Bihar and other states use it. Sometimes BRABU talks, about the Samarth Portal because they are moving some things to it.. For admissions to undergraduate programs from 2026 to 2030 you still need to use the UMIS Portal at umis.brabu.ac.in not the Samarth Portal.

Simple Rule: For BRABU UG Admission 2026-30 → Use umis.brabu.ac.in only. If you see any reference to the Samarth portal for UG admission, verify it directly from brabu.ac.in before proceeding.

Preferences 1-3 should be your dream colleges which’re the most popular or best colleges in your city for your chosen subject. Your marks must be competitive for these colleges.

Honours vs General. Which One Is Better For You?

A lot of students have this question and they cannot find an answer on the internet:

Honours Subject: When you choose a subject as Honours it becomes the main subject that you will study. You will learn more about this subject. You will have to study more papers and get more credit points. If you take the Honours route you will get an Honours Degree after four years. This is really good for getting into a postgraduate programme or for taking competitive exams.

General Programme: In the General programme you get to study subjects but you do not have to specialize in just one. This programme leads to a General Degree after three or four years. This is an option if you are not sure what subject you want to specialize in.

Which One Should You Choose?

You should choose Honours if you know what subject you want to study and you want to do a postgraduate programme in that subject. For example if you want to do a Master of Arts in Hindi you should take a Bachelor of Arts with Hindi Honours now. You should only choose the General programme if you really want to learn about subjects without choosing just one.

In the four-year programme at BRABU that uses the CBCS system you can switch between exit levels like a Certificate after one year a Diploma after two years a Degree, after three years or an Honours or Research degree after four years. However the subject you choose in the semester will mostly decide what you will study for the next four years.

How is the BRABU UG Merit List 2026 calculated.

The BRABU UG Admission 2026-30 merit list is made using the marks from the qualifying exam, which’s the Intermediate or Class 12 exam.

Here is how the BRABU UG Merit List 2026 is typically calculated:

For the BA Arts Honours, the BRABU UG Merit List 2026 is calculated like this:

The merit is the marks in the Arts subject that the student chose as Honours, plus the marks in English plus the marks in any subject.

For the BSc Science Honours, the BRABU UG Merit List 2026 is calculated like this:

The merit is the marks in the Science subject that the student chose as Honours, plus the marks in Physics or Chemistry plus the marks in English.

For the BCom, the BRABU UG Merit List 2026 is calculated like this:

The merit is the marks in the Commerce group subjects, which are Business Studies, Accountancy and Economics plus the marks in English.

If two students have the merit score the student who is older gets priority, which is decided by the date of birth.

This is similar to how other universities in Bihar do it.

The Bihar Board Class 12 results for 2026 are already out.

Students should calculate their expected merit score using the formula, for the BRABU UG Merit List 2026 before they apply and then choose the colleges they like.

BRABU UG Merit List 2026 Date. How Many Merit Lists and What Happens After Each

The university releases the merit list in phases. It is very important to know what happens after each list.

  • After the Merit List (Expected: First Week of June 2026)

Students whose names are in the 1st Merit List for their chosen college must visit the college. They need to go for document verification within a days. Usually they have 5 to 7 days to do this. They also have to pay the college admission fee. They must complete all formalities.

If you are on the list but do not complete admission on time your seat is cancelled.

  • After the Merit List (Expected: Mid-June 2026)

The 2nd merit list is for seats that were still vacant after the list. If your name was not on the list you might be on the 2nd list. You might get your choice or maybe a lower choice college.

  • After the Merit List (Expected: Late June 2026)

The 3rd list fills the remaining seats. If there are still seats left after the list the university might have a Spot Round. They will announce dates and conditions, for this. BRABU UG Merit List is very important. You have to check it.
