What is the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET)?

You want to know if you can apply for both papers. The answer is yes. If you want to teach the kids in Class 1 to 5 and the older kids in Class 6 to 8 you can apply for both Paper I and Paper II at the same time. You will have to pay a fee for Paper I and a separate fee, for Paper II.

CTET September 2026 – Eligibility Criteria

Age Limit

The minimum age to apply for CTET is 18 years. There is no age limit for CTET.

Paper I Eligibility (For teaching Classes 1–5):

To be eligible for Paper I, which’s for teaching classes 1 to 5 you need to have one of the following qualifications:

  • You must have completed Senior Secondary, which’s class 12 with a minimum of 50 percent marks and you must have also completed a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education or you must be appearing in the final year of this diploma.
  • You must have completed Senior Secondary with a minimum of 45 percent marks. You must have completed a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education as per the norms of the National Council for Teacher Education in 2002.
  • You must have completed Senior Secondary with a minimum of 50 percent marks. You must have completed a 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education.
  • You must have completed Senior Secondary with a minimum of 50 percent marks. You must have completed a 2-year Diploma in Special Education.
  • You must have. You must have completed a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education or you must be appearing in the final year of this diploma.

Paper II Eligibility (For teaching Classes 6–8):

If you are from a category, such as SC or ST or OBC or PwD you get a relaxation of 5 percent in the minimum marks required for your educational qualifications.

To be eligible for Paper II, which’s for teaching classes 6 to 8 you need to have one of the following qualifications:

  • You must have graduated with a minimum of 50 percent marks. You must have completed a 1-year Bachelor of Education or you must be appearing in the final year of this course.
  • You must have graduated with a minimum of 45 percent marks. You must have completed a 1-year Bachelor of Education as per the norms of the National Council for Teacher Education.
  • You must have completed Senior Secondary with a minimum of 50 percent marks. You must have completed a 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education.
  • You must have completed Senior Secondary with a minimum of 50 percent marks. You must have completed a 4-year Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science Education or Bachelor of Arts Education or Bachelor of Science Education.
  • You must have graduated with a minimum of 50 percent marks. You must have completed a 1-year Bachelor of Education in Special Education.
  • You must have completed post-graduation with a minimum of 55 percent marks. You must have completed a 3-year integrated Bachelor of Education and Master of Education.

Note that if you are currently in the year of your Bachelor of Education or Diploma in Elementary Education or equivalent programs you can apply for CTET provisionally. However your candidature will be confirmed only after you produce your passing certificate.

The CTET is only open, to citizens. So to apply for CTET you must be a citizen of India.
