VTU Grading System 2026 – SGPA & CGPA Explained

VTU follows an absolute grading system under CBCS, where marks are converted into letter grades on a 10-point scale.

VTU Grade Table

GradeMarks RangeGrade Points
O (Outstanding)90% and above10
S (Excellent)80% – 89%9
A (Very Good)70% – 79%8
B (Good)60% – 69%7
C (Above Average)50% – 59%6
D (Average)40% – 49%5
F (Fail)Below 40%0
E (After Clearing Backlog)Awarded regardless of re-exam marks

Important: If a student fails a subject and then passes it later they get an “E” grade, no matter how well they do on the try.

SGPA and CGPA are calculated like this:

  • SGPA = (Credits times Grade Points) added up then divided by Total Credits for that semester
  • CGPA = (SGPA times Semester Credits) added up then divided by Total Degree Credits

To pass you need to meet these requirements:

  • Get least 40% in each theory subject (thats a Grade D)
  • Have a SGPA of 4.0 for the semester
  • Get 50% of Internal Assessment marks in Practical, Internship or Project work
  • Get 40% of Internal Assessment marks for seminars
  • There’s no Internal Assessment requirement just for theory subjects

You also need to attend classes regularly:

  • You must attend least 85% of classes for each course per semester
  • If you’re absent for a reason (, like illness, sports or cultural activities) the Vice-Chancellor might grant you a 10% exemption
  • If you don’t meet the attendance requirement you have to repeat the semester. You can’t just move on to the next part.

VTU CGPA, to Percentage. Official Formula

To convert your CGPA into a percentage VTU has a formula.. Before using it check your scheme year from your marksheet.

The formula is: Percentage = (CGPA. 0.75) X 10

Lets see how it works:

If your CGPA is 8.25

  • subtract 0.75 that is 7.50
  • then multiply by 10 you get 75.00%

So your VTU CGPA of 8.25 becomes 75.00%.

Degree Classification Based on CGPA

CGPA RangePercentage EquivalentClassification
7.75 and above70% and aboveFirst Class with Distinction (FCD)
6.75 to 7.7460% to 69.9%First Class (FC)
Below 6.75Below 60%Second Class / Pass Class

Scheme Matters: The 2018 scheme is different from the 2021 scheme. For the 2018 scheme you need a CGPA of 7.75 or more. For the 2021 scheme you need a CGPA of 8.5 or more. If you have a CGPA of 8.5 this means you have 85 percent, under the 2021 scheme.. Under the 2018 scheme a CGPA of 8.5 is only 77.5 percent. So always check which scheme applies to you. You need to do this before you use your CGPA for studies or when you apply for a job. The scheme matters for the CGPA. The percentage you get.
