A biodata (short for biographical data) is the standard document required for most Indian government job applications, walk-in interviews, state PSC applications and other sarkari naukri processes. Unlike a corporate resume or CV, a government-style biodata includes personal details such as father's name, mother's name, date of birth, category (General/OBC/SC/ST), Aadhaar number, and other identity information — along with educational qualifications, work experience, and a signed declaration.
A standard government job biodata must include: passport-size photograph, full name, date of birth, father's and mother's name, gender, category, nationality, contact details, permanent address, identity document numbers (Aadhaar, PAN), educational qualifications (examination, board, year, marks, division), work experience if any, languages known, skills, references, and a signed declaration of truthfulness.
For Indian government jobs at the state or central level, a biodata is the preferred format. It is more personal and detailed than a corporate resume. A resume is typically used for private-sector jobs and focuses on skills and achievements. A CV (curriculum vitae) is used in academic and research settings. For most sarkari naukri applications — railway, police, bank, panchayat, etc. — a biodata is the standard.
